Fall Prevention Tips for Seniors: Preparing for a Safe Season

As the seasons change, older adults face an increased risk of fall-related injuries. At Taylor Glen, we believe that safety begins with proactive steps—so you can enjoy each day with confidence and independence.

Keep Your Home Fall-Proof

A safe home environment is your first line of defense against falls. Simple changes can make a big difference:

  • Clear walkways of clutter, loose rugs, and extra furniture
  • Install grab bars in bathrooms near the toilet and shower
  • Brighten hallways, stairs, and entrances with strong lighting
  • Place non-slip mats in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry area

Stay Active to Build Strength and Balance

Regular activity keeps your body strong, flexible, and steady. Consider:

  • Tai Chi for gentle movements that enhance coordination
  • Strength training to improve stability and mobility
  • Walking daily to maintain fitness and confidence in movement

Dress for Safety

  • Wear shoes with non-slip soles and supportive arches
  • Avoid high heels, loose slippers, or ill-fitting footwear
  • Make sure pant legs or skirts aren’t long enough to trip over

Be Mindful of Medications

Some prescriptions can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Review your medications with your healthcare provider to reduce risks and avoid harmful interactions.

Have a Plan in Case of a Fall

  • Keep a phone within easy reach and emergency contacts handy
  • Consider a medical alert device for quick assistance
  • Learn safe ways to get up—or stay still and call for help if injured
